Yorkshire Terriers have a grey, black, and tan coat. Yorkshire Terriers are very playful and energetic dogs. Many Yorkie owners have more than one because these dogs often experience separation anxiety when left alone.

Temperament

The Kennel Club describes the ideal Yorkshire Terrier personality as having an upright carriage and a feisty nature, conveying an air of importance. Though small, the Yorkshire Terrier is active, very protective, curious, and fond of attention. A mentally sound and emotionally secure Yorkie should not display the soft submissive temperament seen in some companion breeds. However, improper training can lead to such behavior. Due to their small size and energetic nature, Yorkies are generally not recommended for homes with very young children. Many reputable breeders prefer to place them in homes with older children (above 10 years) to ensure both the dog's and the child's well-being.

Yorkshire Terriers are easy to train due to their independent working nature. They are naturally intelligent and quick learners, often motivated by food and praise. Originally bred as working dogs, they require both physical and mental stimulation, including long walks, indoor games, and training sessions to keep their minds engaged. While they have a reputation for being yappy, many Yorkie owners find that a well-exercised and content Yorkie is relatively quiet and enjoys curling up on their owner's lap in the evening. Each Yorkie has a unique personality, with some being more laid-back than others. A responsible breeder can provide insights into the temperament and needs of their specific Yorkie line.

Yorkshire Terriers adapt well to various environments, travel comfortably, and make excellent pets for many households. Due to their small size, they require limited exercise but thrive on daily interaction with people. They are often shy around other dogs and prefer staying close to their humans for comfort.

Yorkshire Terriers tend to bark frequently, making them excellent watchdogs as they alert their owners to approaching strangers. However, excessive barking can be managed through proper training and sufficient exercise. In Stanley Coren's book The Intelligence of Dogs, Yorkshire Terriers are ranked 34th in intelligence.
